Martial Arts

If you wish to control others you must first control yourself.
— Miyamoto Musashi

Our approach to martial arts is simple: Effective fighting is less about how many techniques you know and more about how well you can apply one or two moves. We think the path to mastery is walked by constant practice of the basics.

When it comes to combat, we get down to brass tacks. We focus on developing fluency in standing fighting, clinching, and grappling. We learn simple but effective tactics that have proven to be effective. Rather than push a particular style, we encourage everyone to figure out what works best for them and build their own style from there.

Beyond combat, martial arts are a great tool for building athleticism in a way that strength training and even Parkour cannot. From the quick lateral movements, to the dynamic challenges of dealing with an unpredictable opponent, the study of martial arts will greatly enhance your health and fitness.

Ultimately, martial arts are less about how we handle other people and more about how we handle ourselves. We train to react cooly, calmly, and honestly to any kind of conflict - arguments, debates, negotiations, and the innumerable slings and arrows of our modern lives. And, because this is Fifth Ape, we approach the subject matter with respect, but also with a sense of fun and play in a welcoming and encouraging environment that is suitable for people of all backgrounds and skill levels.
